Before I Die

Before I Die is an ongoing global public art project that originated in New Orleans in 2011 by artist Candy Chang. It comprises a large chalkboard wall that features rows of the statement, “Before I die I would like to…” Passers-by can write their responses on the chalkboard wall with chalk. It is a gentle and enticing way to generate discussions in the community between friends and strangers, and an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their life priorities.

In 2016, Jessica worked with artists Martin Bretherick and Monica Donoso to install the Before I Die wall at: The Shaggy Cow in Mittagong, Bowral Library, and the University of Wollongong campus in Moss Vale. In 2019, Martin and Jessica custom-built a Before I Die wall that featured at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre as part of From the Brink.
